Determination of the work of art varies in different cultures and epochs. From the Renaissance to the 20-century, and to some extent still, the Western art critics do not try to define applied art or decorative art as works of art, or at least assign them less importance than works such as paintings without practical usefulness. Other cultures like Chinese and Islamic art does not make such a strong divisions.
